“Boutcha is now horror”: the world discovers the atrocities of the war in Ukraine

In the kyiv region, in Bucha, Ukrainian troops discovered a destroyed town littered with corpses after the Russian withdrawal. The mayor of the city evokes nearly 300 victims. Since the beginning of the war, the Ukrainian prosecutor’s office has been documenting possible violations of the law of war or war crimes.

In total, nearly 300 civilians were massacred in Boutcha.

Bodies exposed in the street

Boutcha is now horror with the image of this man lying in the street, executed, his hands tied behind his back with a white ribbon, describes Nicolas Tonev, special envoy of Europe 1 in Ukraine. The civilians were summarily murdered. The bodies are lying on the sidewalks and roads. They would be about twenty bodies exposed in the street according to the witnesses on the spot. They are mostly men, some shot on their bikes and some outside a front door. Some are old. Ukrainian authorities also showed the trenches containing bodies. The mayor of Boutcha also mentions a mass grave containing nearly 300 corpses of civilians.

Teams responsible for documenting possible violations of the laws of war

Since the start of the Russian offensive, the Ukrainian prosecutor’s office has been documenting possible violations of the law of war or war crimes. Last week, the Prosecutor General of Ukraine explained that she had more than 3,000 files in progress.

There are dedicated teams which are responsible, after bombings or shootings on civilians, for documenting with photos or testimonies any abuses. A census which allows to feed files of possible war crimes. It is also a question of documenting and denouncing the use of weapons that are in principle prohibited. This work was put in place very quickly so as not to miss anything.

The Prosecutor intends to find all those responsible, from the lowest to the highest ranking, to bring them before the judges. There is a desire to go back to the highest of the Russian chains of command, if they are concerned, this is the case for the bombings on the military school in Kharkhiv where the investigation made it possible to go back to a Russian general .
