Football: eliminated by Wales in the play-off, Ukraine will not go to the World Cup

Ukraine were eliminated at the gates of the 2022 World Cup after losing 1-0 to Wales in Cardiff. Gareth Bale’s teammates will play their first World Cup since 1958 while Ukraine’s last and only participation dates back to 2006.

Wales qualified for the next World Cup in Qatar (November 21-December 18) on Sunday after beating Ukraine 1-0 in the play-off final in Cardiff.

This is the second time that the Welsh have managed to qualify for the competition after the World Cup in Sweden in 1958. Andriy Yarmolenko scored, against his camp, the only goal of the meeting which sends the Welsh in group B of the World Cup, with England, the United States and Iran.

Carried by a whole people, but also by the immense outpouring of international sympathy for a country which has suffered for more than three months from the destruction and deaths caused by the Russian invasion, the blue and yellow will therefore not see Qatar.

The Ukrainians lacked realism

In typical British weather, Oleksandr Petrakov’s men nevertheless delivered a more than interesting performance and created many situations without managing to materialize. The Ukrainians will regret these missed chances against goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey, heroic in his goals.

At the final whistle, the tears of the Ukrainian players, who paid tribute to their supporters in the stands of the Cardiff City Stadium, obviously contrasted with the joy of the Welsh. In Qatar, they will join a very English-speaking group B with their English neighbor, the United States and Iran to offer their historical leaders, Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey, a last adventure in the most beautiful of international competitions.
