Deprived of tourists for two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Normandy is refueling on the occasion of the 78th anniversary of the Allied landings in Normandy during the Second World War. Visitors from all over the world flock to the delight of traders.

This is the great return of tourists to the landing beaches. After two years of Covid-19 restrictions, visitors from all over the world are once again flocking to the Normandy coast to celebrate the 78th anniversary of D-Day this Monday. Particularly on the side of Bayeux, epicenter of tourist reception with 70% of international customers. In 2019, more than three million visited the famous beaches for the 75th anniversary of the landings.

This year, the festivities will also be marked by the return of the British. In the streets, while the song of seagulls mixes with the sound of suitcases, it is common to hear English spoken. “We were very disappointed not to be able to come since the start of the pandemic. Here we love the atmosphere and traveling the whole coast. We participate in all the festivities, it’s something we love to do. C It’s an incredible place”, testifies David, one of these visitors from across the Channel.

“It’s crowded”

Before the pandemic, this Brit had been coming here every year for 20 years. The return of these tourists delights traders. “We missed them a lot. Everything has been very, very calm for two years. This week, indeed, the British are on vacation. In terms of figures, it should look good”, predicts Marine who manages accommodation as well as a souvenir shop.

Same story for Clotilde, manager of a restaurant. On the terrace, his team sets up tables, all of which are already reserved. “It’s full, it’s crowded, it’s the biggest weekend of the year. Since there are a lot of people, we can even do two services. It’s rush, we work more”, she rejoices. On the side of the traders as for the town hall, a record year is hoped for.
