Meta: the first users comment on this application and it is not glorious

As the metaverse continues to grow and expand, one app in particular seems fragile, to the point of being criticized by Internet users.

Zuckerberg’s fantasy world

Still obscure to many people, the Facebook metaverse may yet be considered, by some, as “the future of the internet”. For its creator Mark Zuckerberg, it is his fantasy virtual world. While Facebook has changed its name to Meta, Zuckerberg sees it as the “computing platform of the future“.

This is a fictional virtual universe, in which individuals could evolve in persistent and shared spaces, in three dimensions. An Internet of the future where we would no longer browse online in two dimensions, with web browsers, but with avatars, 3D and virtual reality headsets.

A still feverish application

Cinema, TV (Bigscreen), Horizon Worlds (experiences created by users), or even Horizon Venues (sports and concerts), the experiences offered via the Oculus Quest 2 are multiple. But one of them, in particular, draws our attention (especially during a pandemic): being able to telecommute virtually, managed by app Horizon Workrooms. Still full of aberrations, Workrooms is getting an update soon according to Zuckerberg, and it will include an improvement to the customizable office spacecurrently sketchy.

According to Meta’s CEO, users will be able to use a “ metaverse office ” to take Messenger calls, read emails or work on big projects. The update should also fix many issues, encountered by users so far, either the creation of a Horizon Workrooms account from a PC, and not directly from the headset, ergonomic and display problems, or unreliable Mac software, etc.

But it must be said that until then, users have not really been seduced by Horizon Workrooms. Among some comments seen here and there, we can find some criticisms of the type:

I really don’t see the point of this product? Why would you need to work in a virtual world? It’s true that it looks fun, but that’s about it.

How primitive and old-fashioned. Looks like the futuristic spaces of the 80s, lol. Who in the right mind is going to waste their time on this?

This meeting format can be exhausting and does not bring any real added value. Impossible to read faces and look people in the eye. Glasses can cause pain when in use.

A rising curve

Still, to date, more than 11.2 million VR headsets were sold in 2021an increase of 92.1% over the previous year. The Quest 2 is currently the best-selling VR headset in the world, and Zuckerberg’s firm plans to invest at least $10 billion in metaverse projects, just for this year.

And if Meta currently claims 300,000 users on Horizon Worlds, one in four people will spend at least one hour there a day in 2026, according to a study published Monday, February 14, 2022 by the analysis firm Gartner.
