At the beginning of May, Synology announced the launch of the RT6600ax. An all new Wifi 6 certified router, designed to provide home and business with fast and secure connectivity. Here is our preview.

Offered at €324.95, Synology’s new RT6600ax router is the brand’s first to take advantage of triple-band WiFi 6. Equipped with a 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet port, it highlights superior performance and an ergonomic, original, easy-to-access and feature-rich control interface (SRM).

RT6600ax: six antennas and a maximum speed of 6,600 Mbps

The RT6600ax is Synology’s first-ever certified tri-band Wi-Fi 6 router. It comes in a 320mm wide, 175mm long and 200mm deep black case with six adjustable, non-removable antennas. Seven status indicators are located on the top of the router: they show power, LAN, WAN, and Wi-Fi activity.

The right side of the router features Wi-Fi On and Off buttons as well as WPS, while you’ll find all the physical ports on the back. There are three gigabit LAN ports, a gigabit WAN port, a 2.5 gigabit WAN/LAN port, a USB 3.2 port, reset and power buttons, and a power jack.

The router comes with a 42W 12V DC regulator. Synology announces a consumption of around 12W. In the box, there is an Ethernet cable and a quick installation guide, in addition to the power supply.

The RT6600ax is an AX6600 tri-band router: this means that it is capable of offering data rates of up to 600 Mbps on the 2.4 GHz band, 4,800 Mbps on one of the 5 GHz bands and 1,200 Mbps on a second 5 GHz band, for a total theoretical maximum of 6,600 Mbps.

In practice, the RT6600ax offers up to 2 Gbits of wired speed. At one meter, wireless transfers drop to 855 Mbps, 650 Mbps at 5 meters, about 500 Mbps at 7 meters, and 250 Mbps at 10 meters (with speed test performed outdoors).

The router is powered by a quad-core processor from Qualcomm running at 1.8 GHz and 1 GB of DDR3 memory. As Synology claims, the RT6600ax combines the manufacturer’s Smart Connect feature with tri-band technology to optimize device distribution.

Supported Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) technologies include orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA), 160 MHz channel bandwidth, MU-MIMO data simultaneous streaming, and encryption in WPA3. It also uses the UNII-4 spectrum (5.9 GHz) to access additional 20 MHz and 160 MHz channels.

As with some routers from other manufacturers, the RT6600ax can be configured as a Mesh router using compatible Synology routers (and to extend network range).

Safety first !

The RT6600ax is powered by SRM 1.3, the latest version of Synology’s intuitive operating system for routers. In terms of network management, the router supports creating up to five separate networks each of which can map up to 15 wireless SSIDs (3 for each network).

Firewall rules can be configured for each network to limit connectivity to and from less secure devices. Additionally, support for the 802.1q standard simplifies integration into existing networks in router, AP, and Mesh setups.

The RT6600ax can be installed and managed using the Synology Router Manager web console, or from the DS Router mobile app. The web console offers a visually pleasing interface, with the same look and feel as the DiskStation Manager console (used to control corporate NAS devices).

You can use the Safe Access screen to create user profiles, assign devices or web filters to each profile. Predefined filters include Child, Employee, and Guest, or you can create a custom profile. From here, you can also enable Network Protection to protect your devices against phishing, malware, and access to potentially dangerous websites. The Network Protection feature also blocks attempts to access inappropriate sites and lets you see how long each user has been online.

The Network Center screen allows you to manage your connections, monitor resources, configure QoS settings, and configure port forwarding and port triggering settings. The Wi-Fi Connect icon opens a screen where you can configure Wi-Fi settings, enable guest networking, and view a list of currently connected users and the band they are connected to.

Finally, the Control Panel is used to configure external storage devices, enable Windows and Mac file services, view router status information, backup and restore its settings, and more.

Finally, Remote Desktop makes it easy to access Windows, macOS, and RDP or VNC compatible devices on your network, remotely and directly through your browser.

  • 1.8 GHz quad-core processor
