War in Ukraine: logistics, the main problem for Russian troops

More than a month after the start of the war in Ukraine, the staff in Moscow says it wants to devote itself now solely to the liberation of Donbass. Some interpret it as a retreat of the Russian army. It has indeed encountered difficulties on the fronts more to the west, such as in kyiv, the capital, where our special envoy Nicolas Tonev is based. There, the problems of the Russian army are above all logistical.

DECRYPTION

Russia is now concentrating on eastern Ukraine. A major reversal in the war started a month ago. The staff in Moscow says it wants to devote itself now solely to the liberation of the Donbass. Some interpret it as an admission of weakness, as a retreat of the Russian army. It has indeed encountered difficulties on the fronts more to the west, such as in kyiv, the capital, where our special envoy Nicolas Tonev is based. There, the problems of the Russian army are above all logistical.

350 tonnes of supplies every day

350 tons of supplies every 24 hours would be the consumption of an armored regiment deployed and active on a front line. This is the volume given by a specialist in the Russian armies. In these 350 tons, there is everything necessary to remain operational, both from the human point of view, with about 1,000 men in the regiment, and dozens of vehicles.

So there is water, food, fuel, ammunition, spare parts or spare vehicles. In war, everything gets damaged and everything must remain functional. The consumption of material is therefore enormous. Our specialist gives this example: the ordinary Russian tank, the T-80, needs for each kilo of combat mass, four kilos of logistics to remain operational.

Ukraine claims to have destroyed 1,000 Russian trucks

The strength of the Ukrainians was therefore to destroy as many supply trucks as possible. The kyiv army speaks of 1,000. This figure would be exaggerated. It should be divided by two, according to our observer. But 500 trucks destroyed, that is enough to reduce to nothing the deliveries intended for two divisions and thus to paralyze an advance.

The Russians are now looking to shorten their supply lines by capturing key points. This is what is at stake, in large part, on the northern and northwestern fronts of kyiv, where Vladimir Putin’s army is said to be fortifying its positions.
