The European police agency Europol announced in a press release on Friday the removal of more than 1,000 “terrorist and extremist” content on the SoundCloud music streaming platform. The operation is part of a public-private partnership between SoundCloud and Europol with the aim of combating terrorist abuse of the internet.

“Terrorist and extremist” songs used online as propaganda by jihadists to attract young recruits have been removed from the SoundCloud audio distribution platform, Europol announced on Friday. During an operation carried out between May 5 and May 13, “more than 1,000 illegal contents were reported as terrorist or extremist contents”, indicated in a press release Europol, the European police agency based in The Hague.

“Jihadist songs” and “promotion of violent groups”

“Among the referenced content were jihadist songs in several languages as well as audio fragments promoting violent and right-wing extremist groups,” the agency said. Some of this content had already been streamed thousands of times, Europol said, adding that once made aware, SoundCloud deleted the files as a violation of its terms.

The operation, launched by the German authorities, was carried out by Europol jointly with five other countries, Denmark, Hungary, Portugal, Spain and the United Kingdom, in collaboration with SoundCloud. It is part of an ongoing public-private partnership between SoundCloud, law enforcement and Europol aimed at combating “terrorist abuse of the internet, preventing online radicalization and protecting fundamental rights”, Europol said.
